Medicare Advantage Mississippi 2027: what the numbers tell you

Mississippi’s average premium drops by $7.10 a month, about 64%. The CMS 2027 press release projects a much smaller national fall, from $14.37 to $12.00. Nine more plans also come into the state while the national count slips slightly.

One number sets Mississippi apart: 35.24% of people in a stand-alone drug plan get Extra Help. Among the 50 states on the CMS fact sheets, only New York has a higher share. That tells you many Mississippians qualify for help with drug costs, and some who qualify may not have applied. If your income is limited, ask about Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs before you compare premiums. Our Extra Help guide explains the program.

On the drug side, CMS says 58.93% of Mississippians in a stand-alone drug plan can find one with a lower premium than in 2026. If you keep Original Medicare, re-shop your Part D plan this fall.

If your Mississippi plan is ending

A net gain of plans does not mean every plan continues. If one of the Medicare Advantage plans Mississippi insurers sell is not renewing in your county, you should have received a notice. Your coverage continues through December 31, 2026. Then:

  • Choose another plan during Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026.
  • Use the special window. Medicare.gov says that when a plan’s contract isn’t renewed, you can switch between December 8 and the last day of February.
  • Return to Original Medicare and buy Medigap. Under the federal rule in the CMS Medigap guide, people 65 and older get 63 days after their plan ends to buy Plan A, B, D, G, K or L (C or F if eligible before 2020) without health questions.

If you do nothing, you return to Original Medicare on January 1 without drug coverage. Our guide on what to do when a Medicare Advantage plan is not renewing covers each deadline.

Mississippi Medigap rules if you leave Medicare Advantage

The Mississippi Insurance Department sets Medigap standards in its Medicare supplement regulation, Part 3, Chapter 10, issued under Miss. Code Ann. § 83-9-103.

  • Open enrollment (Rule 10.11 A). Six months starting the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Every Medigap policy an insurer sells must be available to you, without health questions.
  • Guaranteed issue (Rule 10.12). Covers set events, including a Medicare Advantage plan leaving Medicare or your area, and the 12-month trial right if you are new to Medicare Advantage.
  • No birthday or anniversary rule. We found no yearly switching right in the regulation. Outside protected windows, insurers can ask health questions.

So if you join one of the Medicare Advantage plans Mississippi sells at 65 and want Medigap years later, expect underwriting. Our Medicare supplement underwriting guide explains what insurers ask.

Mississippi Medigap under 65: the managed care rule

Federal law gives people under 65 no Medigap guarantees. Mississippi adds one. Rule 10.11 D says people eligible for Medicare by reason of disability before 65, who are enrolled in a managed care plan whose coverage ends through cancellation, nonrenewal or disenrollment, have “the guaranteed right to purchase” Medigap Plans A, B, C or F from any insurer within 63 days after the coverage ends.

Two limits apply. Insurers may set premium rates specific to people with disabilities, filed with and approved by the Commissioner. And federal law lets only people first eligible for Medicare before 2020 buy Plans C and F, so newer enrollees would generally choose between Plans A and B. Mississippi Medigap under 65 coverage can cost far more than the same plan at 65, so get quotes before you leave Medicare Advantage.

The rule says “managed care plan” rather than naming Medicare Advantage. If your plan type is unusual, ask the Mississippi Insurance Department before you rely on it. Keep your non-renewal letter, too: under Rule 10.12, people using a guaranteed issue right must send evidence of the date coverage ended with the Medigap application.

Hypothetical example (dates and CMS averages): a 52-year-old in Jackson with Medicare due to a disability gets a non-renewal letter. Coverage ends December 31, 2026. Counting 63 days: 31 days in January, 28 in February (59 days), and 4 in March reach 63, so the deadline is March 4, 2027. Applying in December lets Medigap start January 1. If she stays in Medicare Advantage instead at the state average, her yearly premium falls from $11.18 x 12 = $134.16 to $4.08 x 12 = $48.96, or $134.16 − $48.96 = $85.20 less, before Part B.
