How Do I Verify an Insurance License?
- Visit the National Insurance Producer Registry or your state insurance department’s license lookup.
- Search by the agent’s name or National Producer Number.
- Confirm the license is active and includes the line of authority you need, such as life or health.
Which Lines of Authority Do Our Agents Hold?
Octans agents are licensed for life insurance and, where applicable, accident and health insurance. Agents only sell products in states where they hold an active license and carrier appointment.
What If I Live in a State Not Listed?
Call (617) 935-9220. If no Octans agent is licensed in your state, we will tell you so rather than sell a policy we cannot service.
What Does an Insurance License Allow?
A resident or nonresident producer license allows an agent to sell specific lines of insurance in a specific state. Life agents sell life insurance and annuities; health or accident and health agents sell health, supplemental, and Medicare-related products. Agents must also be appointed by each carrier whose products they sell, and they must complete continuing education to keep licenses active.

How Are Agents Supervised?
Each state insurance department oversees the agents it licenses and investigates consumer complaints. Carriers also audit the agents they appoint. At Octans, leadership reviews new business for suitability and compliance, and our editorial standards govern the information we publish.
How Can You Verify an Insurance Agent’s License?
You can confirm any agent’s license in a few minutes, and we encourage you to do so before you buy.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1. Get the agent’s NPN | Every Octans agent lists a National Producer Number on their profile page. |
| 2. Search the national database | Use the NIPR lookup or your state insurance department’s license search. |
| 3. Check the line of authority | Make sure the license covers life insurance (and health, for Medicare products). |
| 4. Confirm your state | Agents must be licensed in the state where you live. |

What Does a Producer License Mean for You?
A producer license means the agent passed a state exam, cleared a background check, and must complete continuing education. It also means the agent is accountable to your state’s insurance regulator, which you can contact with any complaint.
Which States Are Octans Agents Licensed In?
Octans agents hold licenses across the 19 states we serve, including Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and New Jersey. See the full list and state-specific guides on our states page. Not every agent is licensed in every state, so we match you with an agent licensed where you live.
