Why Do Life Insurance Rates Rise With Age?

Premiums are priced on the chance of a claim during the policy period. That chance rises every year, so term rates typically climb 8 to 10 percent for each year you wait. Health changes as you age can also move you into a costlier rate class.

What Else Affects Life Insurance Rates?

  • Tobacco use: smokers often pay two to three times more.
  • Health history: conditions such as diabetes or heart disease can raise rates.
  • Term length and amount: longer terms and larger benefits cost more.
  • Policy type: whole life costs more than term for the same death benefit.

What Are Life Insurance Options for Seniors Over 60?

After 60, many people choose a smaller final expense policy or a 10-year term. Simplified-issue and no-exam policies skip the medical exam, and guaranteed-issue coverage accepts nearly everyone with a waiting period.

How Can I Lock In Lower Life Insurance Rates?

  1. Apply sooner, because each year of age raises the price.
  2. Quit tobacco for at least 12 months before you apply.
  3. Compare several carriers through an independent agent.
  4. Buy only the term length you need.

What does $500,000 of term life cost by age?

Many families need more than $250,000. The table below shows sample monthly rates for a $500,000, 20-year term policy from MoneyGeek’s term rates by age (updated Oct. 11, 2026), for non-smokers in average health, based on quotes from 21 term carriers. Samples, not a quote.

AgeFemale, $500KMale, $500KChange from 10 years earlier (F / M)
30$32$38n/a
40$47$591.5x / 1.6x
50$102$1372.2x / 2.3x
60$286$3952.8x / 2.9x

The pattern matters more than any single number. Between 30 and 40, the price rises about 50% to 60%. Between 50 and 60, it nearly triples. In other words, each decade you wait costs more than the decade before.

The gap between women and men also widens. At 30, a man pays about $6 more a month. At 60, he pays about $109 more.

How to use this table: find the row closest to your age, then look one row down. That is roughly what the same policy would cost if you waited 10 years. Life insurance rates by age are set by each carrier, so treat the rows as signposts, not exact steps.

Also notice that $500,000 does not cost twice as much as $250,000. At 40, a man pays $35 for $250,000 and $59 for $500,000 in the same MoneyGeek data. Larger policies tend to cost less per dollar of coverage.

How much does waiting 10 years really cost?

Monthly rates can make the jump look small. Total premiums over the full term tell a clearer story. The table multiplies the MoneyGeek $500,000 sample rates above by 240 months (20 years). This is simple math on sample rates, not a quote.

Age when you buyFemale, 20-year totalMale, 20-year total
30$7,680$9,120
40$11,280$14,160
50$24,480$32,880
60$68,640$94,800

A man who buys at 40 instead of 50 would pay about $18,720 less over 20 years for the same $500,000 of coverage. Waiting from 50 to 60 adds about $61,920.

There is a fair counterpoint. If you buy at 30, you pay for coverage during years you might not have needed it. But most people who buy at 30 do so because a spouse, child or mortgage depends on their income. For them, the early years are when coverage matters most, and they are also the cheapest years to lock in.

These totals assume your health class stays the same. In real life, a new diagnosis between quotes can raise your price further or limit your choices. That is the hidden cost of waiting.

How does your health class change life insurance rates by age?

Age is only half the price. The other half is your health class. Insurers sort applicants into classes such as Preferred Plus, Preferred and Standard, based on health and lifestyle.

The table shows annual premiums for a $500,000, 20-year term policy for non-smokers from NerdWallet’s average life insurance rates (updated Oct. 1, 2026), which averages the lowest three rates at each age using LifeStein data. Samples, not a quote.

Age / sexPreferred PlusPreferredStandard
Woman, 30$182$211$328
Woman, 40$278$336$491
Woman, 50$636$749$1,129
Woman, 60$1,640$1,876$2,929
Man, 30$213$271$396
Man, 40$321$405$631
Man, 50$810$966$1,481
Man, 60$2,335$2,633$4,161

At 40, a man in the Standard class pays about twice what a Preferred Plus man pays ($631 vs. $321 a year). By 60, that gap is $1,826 a year.

Put another way, a healthy 50-year-old woman in the Preferred Plus class ($636 a year) pays only a little more than a 40-year-old woman in the Standard class ($491). When you read life insurance rates by age, remember that health can move your price as much as a decade of aging.

Your class is decided by the insurer after you apply, not by you. Different carriers weigh the same health history in different ways. That is one reason to compare several carriers rather than accept the first offer.

What does whole life cost from age 40 to 70?

Whole life costs more than term because it lasts for life and builds cash value. Here are sample monthly rates for $100,000 of whole life from MoneyGeek’s whole life rates by age (updated Sept. 30, 2026), for non-smokers in average health. Samples, not a quote.

AgeFemale, $100KMale, $100K
40$127$130
45$135$155
50$146$186
55$204$239
60$288$308
65$399$434
70$555$615

Whole life premiums stay level once you buy, so the age you start sets the price for life. A woman who buys at 55 pays about $204 a month for good. Waiting until 65 nearly doubles that to $399.

Compare that with term. At 60, $100,000 of whole life costs about $288 (female) or $308 (male) a month in this data, while $500,000 of 20-year term at 60 costs $286 or $395. You pay for permanence: the whole life policy never expires, while the term policy ends at 80.

Rates vary by source. Ethos lists $100,000 of traditional whole life at $205 (female) and $229 (male) a month at age 50, higher than MoneyGeek’s figures. Compare term vs whole life before you decide.

What is the oldest age you can buy life insurance?

Most people can still buy some coverage into their 80s. What changes with age is the type of policy, the amount and how much proof of health the insurer asks for.

Policy type / carrierPublished issue agesPublished amountsSource
No-exam term (Legal & General America)20 to 60; 61 to 70Up to $5 million; up to $500,000L&G underwriting guide

Guaranteed whole life (Physicians Mutual)45 to 85 (varies by state)$3,000 to $20,000Choice Mutual

The takeaway: large amounts of coverage are easiest to get before 60 or 70. After that, most options are smaller whole life policies meant for final expenses. Limits change, and each carrier sets its own. See our guides to life insurance over 70 and life insurance over 80.

Life insurance rates by age after 65: guaranteed issue

After 65, many people want a smaller policy for final expenses. If health makes it hard to qualify, guaranteed issue whole life asks no health questions. These monthly rates are from the Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life rate chart (effective Aug. 1, 2026), one carrier’s published chart. Samples, not a quote.

Age$5,000 (F / M)$10,000 (F / M)$15,000 (F / M)
65$28.62 / $35.54$56.23 / $70.07$83.85 / $104.61
70$34.93 / $43.85$68.87 / $86.70$102.80 / $129.55
75$46.42 / $60.00$91.85 / $118.99$137.27 / $177.99
80$64.72 / $83.76$128.44 / $166.52$192.16 / $249.27
85$79.35 / $98.81$157.70 / $196.62$236.05 / $294.42

Know the trade-off. Guaranteed issue policies pay a reduced benefit in the first two years. For this product, sold through Navy Mutual, a death from natural causes in that period pays 110% of the premiums paid. Hypothetical example: a 70-year-old man pays $86.70 a month for $10,000 and dies of an illness after 12 months. He has paid $1,040.40, so the benefit would be about $1,144, not $10,000. After the two-year period, the full $10,000 applies, and accidental deaths are generally paid in full from day one. If you can answer health questions, simplified issue coverage is often cheaper and pays the full benefit sooner. See our small life insurance policy guide.

Do no-exam policies cost more at each age?

Not much, if you are healthy. NerdWallet publishes no-exam rates next to its fully underwritten rates for the same $500,000, 20-year policy. Here is the Preferred Plus class, annual premiums (data valid Oct. 1, 2026). Samples, not a quote.

Age / sexWith examNo exam
Woman, 30$182$184
Woman, 40$278$279
Woman, 50$636$639
Man, 30$213$215
Man, 40$321$329
Man, 50$810$814

The difference is a few dollars a year. For healthy buyers, skipping the exam mostly saves time rather than costing money. The bigger limit is how much coverage you can get without an exam as you age: Legal & General America’s guide lists up to $5 million for ages 20 to 60, but up to $500,000 for ages 61 to 70, and Policygenius notes that simplified and guaranteed issue policies typically top out between $25,000 and $40,000. Why do rate charts differ from site to site?

If you compare charts online, you will see different prices for the same age. That does not mean one is wrong. Each chart is built a different way:

  • Health class. MoneyGeek’s term figures are for average health. Policygenius’s chart uses the Preferred class, so its rates are lower.
  • Date. Policygenius’s term rate chart is valid as of Oct. 1, 2024. It shows a 40-year-old paying $22 (female) or $25 (male) a month for $250,000 of 20-year term. MoneyGeek’s October 2026 average-health figures are $28 and $35.
  • Method. NerdWallet averages the lowest three rates at each age. MoneyGeek draws on quotes from 21 carriers. A carrier’s own chart shows only that carrier.
  • Billing. Some charts show monthly rates and others annual. Check the label before you compare.

Use any chart of life insurance rates by age as a guide to the shape of prices, not your final price. Your actual premium depends on your age, sex, health, tobacco use, state, carrier and underwriting.

Life insurance rates by age: the bottom line

Three lessons stand out from the tables on this page. First, life insurance rates by age climb faster each decade, so buying sooner usually costs less in total, not just per month. Second, your health class can move your price as much as ten years of aging, so it pays to compare carriers that may rate you differently. Third, after about 70 the choices shift to smaller whole life and guaranteed issue policies. If you’re unsure where you fit, a licensed agent can price several carriers for your age and health in one call.

Life Insurance Rates by Age FAQ

What is the best age to buy life insurance?

Generally the younger and healthier you are, the cheaper it is. Many people buy when they marry, buy a home, or have children.

Can I get life insurance after 70?

Yes. Final expense, guaranteed issue, and some term policies are available into your 80s, usually with smaller benefits.

Are these rates quotes?

No. They are published sample rates for illustration. An agent can quote your exact price.

Why do life insurance rates go up with age?

The chance of dying during the policy rises every year, and health conditions become more common. In MoneyGeek’s sample 20-year term rates, a man’s $250,000 premium rises from $35 a month at 40 to $77 at 50 and $215 at 60.
