Life Insurance Quotes: Compare Coverage Options From Multiple Carriers
Life insurance quotes can help you compare estimated premiums and coverage options before applying. Octans Insurance is an independent insurance agency that helps consumers review available options based on age, health, budget, coverage goals, and carrier eligibility.
- Compare available life insurance options
- Review term, whole life, final expense, universal life, and other coverage types
- Understand how underwriting can affect your final rate
- Request a quote without an obligation to purchase
- Life insurance quotes depend mainly on age, sex, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, and policy type.
- Comparing several carriers matters because each underwrites health conditions differently.
- Published samples show a 40-year-old non-smoker paying roughly $35–$59 a month for $250,000–$500,000 of 20-year term.
- Online quotes are estimates until a carrier completes underwriting.

How Do Life Insurance Quotes Work?
A life insurance quote is an estimate of what coverage may cost based on information available before the carrier completes its final underwriting review. Quotes are useful for comparing policy types, coverage amounts, term lengths, and insurers.
The final premium can differ from an initial quote. Insurance carriers determine final rates and eligibility after reviewing the application and any health, prescription, medical, financial, or other underwriting information required for the product.
What Information Is Used for a Life Insurance Quote?
- Age and date of birth: Age is an important factor in life insurance pricing and product eligibility.
- State: Product availability, forms, and features can vary by state.
- Coverage amount: The requested death benefit affects the estimated premium.
- Policy type: Term, whole life, final expense, universal life, and other products have different pricing structures.
- Tobacco use: Tobacco classifications can significantly affect rates.
- Health information: Medical history, medications, build, and other underwriting factors may affect eligibility and pricing.
Compare Common Life Insurance Options
| Coverage Type | Common Purpose | Coverage Period | Cash Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term Life | Income replacement, mortgage, debts, family protection | Specified term | Generally none |
| Whole Life | Permanent protection and legacy needs | Permanent when policy requirements are met | Yes |
| Final Expense | Funeral and smaller end-of-life expenses | Typically permanent | Typically yes |
| Universal Life | Permanent protection with flexible features | Depends on funding and policy terms | Yes |
Why Life Insurance Quotes Differ Between Companies
Life insurance companies do not all price or underwrite applicants the same way. Each carrier establishes its own pricing, underwriting guidelines, health classifications, issue ages, coverage limits, and eligibility rules.
One insurer may evaluate a health condition, medication, occupation, family history, or other underwriting factor differently from another. Comparing available carriers can therefore be useful when looking for coverage that fits your circumstances.
Term Life Insurance Quotes
Term life insurance provides coverage for a specified period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years when those terms are available for the applicant. It is commonly considered for income replacement, mortgage protection, debt protection, education funding, and other financial obligations that may decrease over time.
When comparing term quotes, look beyond the initial premium. Review the term length, death benefit, conversion provisions, available riders, renewal provisions, and whether the premium is level for the selected term.
Whole Life and Permanent Life Insurance Quotes
Whole life and other forms of permanent life insurance are designed for longer-term protection. Permanent policies generally cost more than comparable term coverage because they are structured differently and may include cash value or other policy features.
When comparing permanent coverage, review guarantees, premium requirements, cash value provisions, surrender charges where applicable, policy loans, riders, and the amount of coverage that fits your budget.
Life Insurance Quotes With Health Conditions
A health condition does not automatically mean life insurance is unavailable. Carriers may consider the diagnosis, severity, treatment, medications, stability, recent testing, hospitalizations, complications, and time since significant medical events.
Some applicants may qualify through traditional, accelerated, or simplified underwriting. Other applicants may consider guaranteed issue coverage when available and appropriate. Underwriting rules vary among carriers.
Online Life Insurance Quotes vs. Final Rates
Online life insurance quotes can provide useful preliminary estimates, but they are not final underwriting decisions. An estimate may assume a health classification that changes after the carrier reviews the application.
Final rates are determined by the carrier at the time of underwriting. Before accepting coverage, review the approved premium, death benefit, policy type, coverage period, riders, exclusions, limitations, and guarantees.
How Much Life Insurance Should You Quote?
Consider the financial need you want the policy to address. This can include income replacement, mortgage balance, other debts, education funding, final expenses, dependent care, existing savings, and current life insurance.
There is no single coverage amount that fits every household. Comparing several death benefit amounts can help illustrate how the amount of coverage affects estimated premiums and long-term affordability.
Common Mistakes When Comparing Life Insurance Quotes
Choosing Only by the Lowest Displayed Price
A preliminary quote may change after underwriting. Compare policy features, guarantees, coverage duration, and carrier requirements in addition to estimated price.
Assuming a Quote Means You Are Approved
A quote is an estimate. Coverage and final pricing depend on the carrier’s application and underwriting process.
Comparing Different Products as if They Are Identical
Term, whole life, universal life, and final expense insurance have different purposes, guarantees, durations, and pricing structures.
Providing Incomplete Information
Accurate information can produce more meaningful estimates and reduce differences between a preliminary quote and the underwriting result.

What Is a Good Life Insurance Quote?
A good quote isn’t just the lowest number. It’s a price you can keep paying, for the right amount and length of coverage, from a financially strong company, in the health class you’ll actually get. Use this checklist when you compare life insurance quotes:
- Same coverage amount and term length on every quote
- The health class each quote assumes (Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard). A quote at Preferred Plus may not be the price you’re approved at.
- Riders included, such as terminal or chronic illness benefits and conversion rights
- The company’s financial strength rating, ideally A or better from A.M. Best
- Whether an exam is required, and how long approval takes
How Much Is a $500,000 Life Insurance Policy for a 50-Year-Old?
For a non-smoking 50-year-old man in average health, published sample rates put a $500,000, 20-year term policy at about $137 a month. A woman the same age pays about $102 (MoneyGeek, updated October 11, 2026). In the best health class, the yearly cost can be much lower. NerdWallet’s October 2026 data shows about $810 a year for a 50-year-old man in Preferred Plus, versus about $1,481 a year in Standard (NerdWallet). These are samples, not quotes. Your price depends on your health, history and the carrier.
How Much Is a $1,000,000 Life Insurance Policy a Month?
A $1 million term policy usually costs somewhat less than twice a $500,000 policy, thanks to volume discounts at higher face amounts. For a healthy 40-year-old non-smoker, that often works out to about $45 to $95 a month for 20 years, depending mostly on health class. At 50 it can be several times that. A $1 million whole life policy costs far more, often thousands of dollars a year, so most buyers at this level use term coverage.
Who Has the Best and Cheapest Life Insurance?
There’s no single cheapest company. Each insurer prices different ages, health conditions and coverage amounts its own way. One company may be cheapest for a healthy 35-year-old, while another is cheapest for a 55-year-old with controlled blood pressure, and a third for a smoker. That’s why comparing quotes from several carriers matters, and why an independent agency can often beat a single company’s online price.
Ways to get the cheapest quote you qualify for:
- Apply while you’re younger. Rates rise with every birthday.
- Be accurate about your health. A surprise in underwriting can move you to a more expensive class.
- Pick term coverage for income replacement and only add permanent coverage where you need it.
- Ask whether paying yearly costs less than paying monthly.
- If you’ve quit tobacco or lost weight, ask when you can request a better rating.
Life Insurance Quotes Over 50, 60 and 70
As you get older, the kind of quote that makes sense changes. Over 50, many people still buy 15- or 20-year term coverage, often without an exam. Over 60, 10- or 15-year term and smaller whole life policies become more common. Over 70, most quotes are for final expense whole life or guaranteed universal life. See our guides for each age: over 60, over 70 and over 80, plus our life insurance rates by age chart.
Will Getting a Life Insurance Quote Affect My Credit or Records?
No. Getting a quote doesn’t affect your credit score. When you formally apply, insurers may check the MIB (a medical information exchange used by insurers), your prescription history and your motor vehicle record, with your written permission. These checks help price the policy and don’t hurt your credit. If you’re curious what’s on file, you can request your free MIB consumer file once a year.
What Happens After You Get Your Quotes?
Once you pick a quote, the agent completes the application with you, usually by phone in 20 to 40 minutes. The insurer then reviews your records and may schedule a short exam. You’ll get a final offer with your approved health class and price. If it’s higher than quoted, you can accept it, ask the agent to try another carrier, or walk away. There’s no obligation until you sign and pay, and most states also give you a free-look period after the policy arrives.
Life Insurance Quotes FAQs
How do I get life insurance quotes?
You can request life insurance quotes by providing basic information such as age, state, tobacco use, desired coverage amount, and coverage type. Final rates depend on carrier underwriting and eligibility.
Are life insurance quotes free?
Life insurance quotes are generally available without a fee. A quote is an estimate and is not an offer or guarantee of coverage.
What information is needed for a life insurance quote?
Age, state, coverage amount, policy type, tobacco use, and basic health information are commonly used. Additional information may be required during underwriting.
Why do life insurance quotes differ between companies?
Carriers use different pricing, underwriting guidelines, health classifications, issue ages, products, and policy features. The same applicant may receive different estimates or underwriting decisions.
Is an online life insurance quote the final price?
Not necessarily. Online quotes are estimates. Final rates are determined by the insurance carrier after any required underwriting and application review.
Can I compare different types of life insurance quotes?
Yes. You can compare term, whole life, final expense, universal life, and other available options, but each type has different features, costs, guarantees, and coverage durations.
Can health conditions affect my life insurance quote?
Yes. Health history, medications, tobacco use, build, medical events, and other underwriting factors can affect eligibility and final rates. Carrier guidelines vary.
Does requesting a life insurance quote mean I have to buy a policy?
No. Requesting or comparing a quote does not require you to purchase coverage. Coverage begins only after applicable application, approval, issue, acceptance, and premium requirements are satisfied.
